When the Political Process Gives You Lemons…

I am not happy about Donald Trump.Trump

I have voted Republican most of my life. Not because I necessarily believe that Republicans are more virtuous, but because they usually seem less dangerous than Democrats.

I embrace those traditional conservative values of smaller government, lower taxes and less regulation, which nourish individual liberty and prosperity.

I like liberty. I like prosperity. I want all of us to have the freedom to better ourselves in a country where the government gets out of our pockets and leaves us alone to do that “pursuit of happiness” thing we all like to talk about. Continue reading

The Hypocrisy of Virtue

caterpillar

“Beware of no man more than of yourself; we carry our worst enemies within us.” – Charles Spurgeon

I’ll never forget the conversation I had with my little girl about a week after she started kindergarten.

Stephanie seemed upset as I was tucking her into bed that evening, so I asked her if anything was wrong. She looked at me sadly and said, “Daddy, it’s so hard to be good, and it’s so easy to get into trouble.”

Oh, little girl, truer words were never spoken!

I hated to have to tell her that she was right, and that it was pretty much the way life is. We are never more than one step away from stepping in it, and the road we travel in this life is fraught with peril.

Apple vs FBI: Why Apple Needs to Give It Up

Victims

The 14 victims of the San Bernardino terrorist attack.

If I murdered a few of my neighbors and hid their bodies in my basement, should I be able to invoke my right to privacy to prevent the police from searching my home?

If I was laundering money for a Mexican drug cartel, could I invoke my right to privacy to keep police from looking at my bank records?

The obvious answer to these questions is a very reasonable “No.”

Is It Really God’s Fault?

A person’s own folly leads to their ruin, yet their heart rages against the Lord.  (Proverbs 19:3, NIV)

distressed faceDo you know people who are always complaining?

No matter how much they try, things always seem to go wrong? Do they whine about how unfair life is? If it weren’t for bad luck, they wouldn’t have any luck at all?

It is amazing how often people with this attitude will blame their troubles on God. They say things like, “I don’t know why God is punishing me this way,” or “If God is supposed to be so good and loving, where is he? Why is my life so messed up?”

The people who say these kinds of things are missing an important point: You cannot blame God for the condition of your life if you have never allowed him to be in charge of it.

If your life is a train-wreck, you need to ask yourself, “Who has been running the locomotive for all these years?”

Fleecing the Next Generation

My conscience bothered me a little bit at first, but as time went on it became easier and easier. Before long, I didn’t even give it a second thought.

PIGGY BANKSome time ago, I was short on cash the day before payday. All I needed was enough gas in the tank to get to work. I didn’t have time to stop at the bank. Then I remembered my little grand-daughter Miranda’s piggy bank.

We keep a bank at our house for her so she can save the money she earns when she helps us with chores. After she has saved for a while we take her to Dollar General and she buys a few toys.

So I helped myself to ten bucks from her bank, and left an IOU to help me remember to pay her back.

Remembering the Day I Became Old

HOUR GLASSI could never have foreseen how my ego would be crushed on that fateful day.

It was one of those moments in life that you never forget.  I can still remember it like it was yesterday…

My wife and I were on an early morning shopping trip at our local K-Mart when my stomach began to growl. It was past breakfast time, and we had not yet eaten.

Just down the aisle I noticed a little cafe tucked into the corner of the store, with a sign advertising a $2.99 breakfast special. Perfect!  A quick cheap bite and we’d be on our way.

An attractive young woman, who couldn’t have been a day over 18, smiled sweetly at us from behind the counter as we walked up to order.

Stop Me Before I Hoard Again!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I knew we were in trouble when I found my deceased father-in-law’s leg under the bed in the guest room.

They say that you can’t begin to rehabilitate yourself until you admit that you have a problem, so I’ll bare my soul to the world and admit it publicly: I am a hoarder.

Even worse, I am married to another hoarder. Someday you will see a report about us on the 6 o’clock news after the police find our decayed remains buried beneath a fallen stack of old magazines.

But we’re trying to mend our ways. Which brings us to how I found my father-in-law’s leg.
